WHERE DOES THIS TEA COME FROM?

Yiwu, Yunnan

Yiwu, Yunnan

Yiwu is a historic town in Mengla County, Yunnan, and an important stop along the Ancient Tea Horse Road. It is also one of the most renowned Pu-erh tea regions. During the Qing dynasty, Yiwu tea was associated with imperial tribute tea, giving the region a long and distinguished tea history.

Yiwu tea is known for its classic character of high aroma and a soft, smooth liquor. The tea is delicate, silky and sweet, with floral and honeyed notes. It leaves a long-lasting sweetness and deep throat finish, together with a distinctive mountain character.

Yiwu is also home to many ancient tea trees. With careful storage and ageing, the tea can gradually develop a fuller body, deeper aroma and greater complexity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ripe Pu-erh tea?
Ripe Pu-erh, also called shou or shu Pu-erh, is made from Yunnan tea leaves that have undergone wet-pile fermentation. This process creates a darker, smoother and more mellow tea with a fuller body than young raw Pu-erh.
What is pile aroma in ripe Pu-erh?
Pile aroma, sometimes called wo dui or wet-pile aroma, is the earthy, fermented smell created during ripe Pu-erh production. A small amount can be normal in younger tea, but it should gradually become cleaner and less dominant over time.
Should good ripe Pu-erh smell fishy?
Good ripe Pu-erh should not have a strong, unpleasant fishy or rotten smell. Young shou Pu-erh can sometimes have a temporary pile aroma from fermentation, but this should soften with proper airing and storage.
Why does some ripe Pu-erh taste earthy or woody?
Earthy, woody, dried-fruit and cocoa-like notes can be normal in ripe Pu-erh. The key difference is cleanliness: good ripe Pu-erh should taste deep and smooth rather than like damp soil, mildew or stagnant water.
Why does my ripe Pu-erh taste fishy?
A fishy taste may come from a young or poorly finished tea, insufficient airing, or unsuitable storage. Rinsing the leaves once or twice and allowing the tea to rest in a clean, dry and odor-free environment may reduce temporary pile aroma.
Why does ripe Pu-erh sometimes feel drying or rough in the throat?
A drying or rough sensation can come from strong brewing, immature fermentation, poor storage or low-quality material. Try using less tea, a shorter steeping time and a quick rinse before deciding whether the tea itself is too astringent.
Should ripe Pu-erh tea liquor look completely black?
Not necessarily. Good ripe Pu-erh can range from deep red to dark reddish-brown and should usually have some clarity and brightness. A very dark, cloudy or muddy liquor may be caused by excessive leaf dust, over-brewing or storage issues.
How should I rinse ripe Pu-erh?
Use near-boiling water for a quick rinse, then discard the rinse water. For a young ripe Pu-erh with noticeable pile aroma, a second short rinse may help open the leaves and reduce temporary fermentation notes.
Is ripe Pu-erh suitable for beginners?
Yes. Ripe Pu-erh is often a comfortable starting point because it is usually smoother, fuller and less bitter than young raw Pu-erh. Begin with a lighter brew and increase the strength gradually.
How should I store ripe Pu-erh tea?
Store ripe Pu-erh in a clean, dry, ventilated and odor-free place away from sunlight, moisture, spices and strong household smells. Avoid sealed containers that trap unwanted odors unless the tea is already clean and stable.
